Teacher activity: Hand out learning intentions sheet - Highlight words you don't understand just yet Video: New Zealand women in science Student activity: Students individually have a household item and have to decide whether its an acid or a base |
Thursday 23rd 2. Properties of acids and bases Settling activity: rearranging activity Teacher demonstration: PowerPoint on what acids / alkalis are and the hazards of them Student activity worksheet: What is corrosive? Kahoot quiz: simple acids and bases Teacher activity: Show students my blog and what to write / what you can include Student activity: Create a blog, using the website 'weebly' or any other platform you want to use. Wednesday 30th 3. Making and using indicators - cabbage Settling activity: Students draw the hazard symbols in a lab and explain what they mean. Teacher demonstration: What does neutral mean and how to make red cabbage indicator. Teacher demonstration: As a class explain how to write a scientific open investigation Student activity: Open investigation - Students make their own red cabbage indicator. Use this indicator to test different substances (HCl, H20 & NaOH) for whether they are acidic or basic. Students blow into the solution to see whether CO2 is acidic or basic Plenary: Upload photos and write about the experiments today in their blog or on their onenote. |

Wednesday 6th 4. Using litmus paper indicators Settling activity: Students write their own investigation plan for testing using their indicators Student activity: Get students to use other common plants (Grapes, Flowers & betroot) to see if they work as indicators. Teacher demonstration: PowerPoint on litmus paper. Use a teacher demonstration to explain litmus paper (HCl, H20 & NaOH) Student activity: Get students to test different household items using litmus paper Plenary: Students upload photos and write about the experiments they did today - conclusion |

Take a screenshot and add the photo to their onenote Teacher demonstration: Using universal indicator PPT and the colours which represent a strong / weak acid & base Student activity: Get students to test solutions in a circuit & write a conclusion on their findings Homework: Acids and Bases CLOZE activity |
